The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced Development Standards Officer to join a community-focused local government team in regional Central Queensland. In this role, you will play a key part in promoting high-quality development outcomes by ensuring compliance with planning, building and environmental legislation across the region.

Working with a multidisciplinary compliance team, you will lead investigations, provide expert advice to internal and external stakeholders, and support balanced, practical enforcement outcomes. This is a hands-on role suited to a professional who enjoys autonomy, problem-solving and meaningful engagement with the community and industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate and assess development activities to ensure compliance with relevant planning, building and environmental legislation
  • Lead and manage complex compliance investigations, including evidence gathering and enforcement actions where required
  • Provide clear, practical advice to stakeholders, translating technical requirements into plain language
  • Engage professionally with developers, consultants, builders and community members to encourage best-practice outcomes
  • Prepare accurate records and reports that support legally defensible decisions
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and collaborative team outcomes

About You

You are an experienced compliance or regulatory professional with strong technical knowledge and the confidence to make sound, defensible decisions. You bring a balanced approach to regulation, combining professionalism, empathy and excellent communication skills.

You will ideally have:

  • Experience undertaking development, building or planning compliance investigations
  • Strong understanding of Queensland planning, building and environmental legislation
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex matters involving multiple stakeholders
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A collaborative, solutions-focused approach

Tertiary qualifications in planning, building or a related discipline and/or experience in government investigations will be highly regarded.
